Without a doubt anyone can just go to a designer and have the complete process done for them,
from the designing to installing. But for some your Do-it-yourself folks, there is always room for you to
showcase your skills. For some painting kitchen cupboards is the quickest and cheapest way to perform a long
overdue makeover for your kitchen. By updating the colors you have the flexibility to add a whole new look that
would cost a fraction of the price of buying completely new units.
To begin one of the first steps in this process would be to choose an appropriate paint color to
use. In today's market there are an impressive amount of color options and you could always hire a professional
to help you pair the appropriate colors. You could even supply a color sample and they can produce that color of
paint for you! If you have no where to start, it might be good to know that traditionally speaking, creamy white
colors are always classic and grand. Whereas contemporary loves will likely enjoy different shades of grey or
the highly popular sandy brownish grey color. For the fashion forward you can even consider mixing matching
different shades of bright vibrant colors such as lime green or sky blue. The combinations to painting kitchen
cupboards are endless and only bound by your imagination.
So after the color selection process is complete you must remove the cupboards and rid the
surfaces of any dirt or residue from normal use. Clean with the cleaning agent of your choice and allow to
completely dry. In order to have a good paint job it is imperative to sand your cupboards with fine sand paper
to ensure that the primer sticks and subsequently prolong the life of the paint job. Be sure to visit any home
store to purchase the proper sandpapers.
After removing all the dust from the sand job it is time to apply the primer, and what this does
is it creates a stronger bond between the cupboard and the paint so that it is less likely to peel or chip off.
Be sure that if your cupboards have been previously varnished then this step is imperative as the new paint job
would not stick and last. One note about primers is that an interior oil based primer is the better selection as
opposed to latex based. Be sure to also keep the room well ventilated. After primer is applied and has dried you
can proceed to the next step and that is of course painting your kitchen cupboards. Remember that paint sticks
better when the primer is dry but “fresh”, also that heavy coats of paint are not recommend. Instead do thin
coats which is also a key to lasting paint jobs. Letting the previous coat dry before applying the next thin
coat is also helpful.
More likely than not, 2 coats of paint will usually be sufficient for standard kitchen
cupboards, but depending on the material of the cupboard your results may vary. Regardless of it all the major
concepts of painting kitchen cupboards are similar and when you are done the results will make a huge difference
for your kitchen.
